Ep. 131 – Millennium Hamlet

We explore late-20th century cinema's fascination with Shakespeare's most iconic story.

Show Notes

“To be, or not to be, that is the question”—or it certainly was at the turn of the millennium! Logan & Andy prep their prop skulls and monologues as they discuss three different adaptations of one of Shakespeare’s most iconic tragedies across the last decade of the last century: Franco Zeffirelli’s stripped-down 1990 version with Mel Gibson, Branagh’s quintessential and unabridged 1996 adaptation, and Michael Almereyda’s very Y2K-esque 2000 take starring Ethan Hawke. This is MILLENNIUM HAMLET.

How does each version stand out from the others? What do these darlings of the era bring to the titular character? Also, why doesn’t every monologue take place in a Blockbuster? Find out on this theatrical new episode of ODD TRILOGIES!
